Chanukah

Chanukah is at the time of year that the dark of the night is longest.

Greece, is called by the name, חושך, as alluded to in the pasuk,
וחושך על פני תהום.

What is the difference between light and dark?

They are not different realities. Darkness is a state where essentially the same reality exists, but a person’s eyes do not see it.

That means there is no deficiency in the object just in my physical ability to see.
From the miracle of Chanukah, we learn that if we want, we can chase away darkness.

Rav Pincus posits that the greatness darkness of our generation is “מחשבת הקטנות”.
When we consider ourselves small and unable to achieve that is darkness.
The חשמונאים stood bravely against huge military might with their trust in Hashem.
So too, by bolstering our emunah and bitachon in Hashem who has given us our talents and strengths we can achieve greatness.

Appreciating our unique greatness granted to us by Hashem and taking steps forward to serve Him with those strengths is tapping into the power of the candle that lights up the darkness.

We should not underestimate even the smallest amount of greatness.
“מועט המחזיק את המרובה”

Just as the small flask of oil remained lit for eight days, we need to appreciate and believe in our unique light no matter how small we deem it.
